How to spot a possible fraud Take a close look at pictures below. At first glace the seller looks ok but on closer inspection there are a few things that should set the alarm bells ringing.
Here the 100% positive feedback looks quite good. Read on. Postage cost of £40. Quite a few people on eBay try to put the cost of the item in with the postage costs as the sellers fee does not include postage. For whatever reason, this is against eBay policy and so if you see a seller doing this report them to eBay. Item location is Zhongguo, United Kingdom. It must be up North somewhere ;-)
The grammar on the description is not so good but I think it has been established that the seller is not English so that can be excused. However, very bad grammar and spelling is a good indication that the seller perhaps does not take his selling so seriously. "This ring was made by the manufacturer as an individual ring and, if is out of stock, may not be able to be remade with the exact same specifications". So, if you did actually receive a ring, it may not be the one you thought you had bought. "When I receive the order from Amazon.com, I will email you regarding sizing". Does that mean he has to first buy the ring from Amazon? So the seller has stated that he does not actually have the ring for sell personally. Payment options. Bank wire transfer = hard to trace and non refundable. Western Union = very hard to trace and non refundable (eBay strongly advise against using Western Union). Paypal = traceable and refundable - although refunds can be troublesome. More than likely, the buyer would have received an email saying that the seller is having trouble with their Paypal account so could they use one of the other payment options instead.
Postage would cost you £50 as the insurance of £10 was mandatory. "UNCONDITIONAL MONEY BACK GUARANTEE (shipping and handling not included)" I liked that bit "shipping and handling not included". So if the buyer won this item and decided that the cheap replacement that they sent, if they did actually send anything, was not to their liking they shall get their 99p back. Very generous.
Here you can see at a glance that something is amiss. The seller has 14 in positive feedback but all from suspended users. The suspended users and the seller were no doubt one in the same. The usernames are even similar. You may think that the areas I have picked up on are obvious but time and time again I see auctions like this one on eBay and people do fall for it. I have warned a number of people personally after reporting the seller to eBay. eBay are getting a lot better at catching the fraudsters but it can take a little time.
